NEW DELHI: Although there was no heatwave condition on Saturday, the city recorded its hottest April day in three years as the maximum temperature rose to 42.1 degrees Celsius, three notches above normal, at base station Safdarjung. The maximum was 41.7 degrees Celsius a day earlier.
After a sunny day, skies turned cloudy on Saturday evening with strong winds blowing in the city.

The last time Delhi reported a higher maximum temperature in April was at 43.5 degrees Celsius in 2022. On Saturday, Ridge observatory in north Delhi recorded the highest maximum temperature at 43.3 degrees Celsius, four degrees above normal. It was followed by Ayanagar at 42.6 degrees Celsius and Palam at 42.3 degrees Celsius.
The minimum temperature stood at 20.7 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal. "The minimum temperatures were appreciably below normal by 1-4 degrees Celsius and maximum temperatures are above normal by 2-4 degrees Celsius over most places over Delhi," said IMD.
Though the mercury remained high across Delhi, the criteria for heatwave conditions was not met at any station on Saturday. Some parts of the city had recorded heatwave condition on Friday.
A heatwave day is declared when the maximum is 4.5 degrees and more above the normal temperature and the maximum is at least 40 degrees Celsius. A heatwave is also considered if the maximum temperature touches 45 degrees Celsius or above.

An official said the maximum temperatures are likely to dip by 1-2 degrees Celsius during the next two days. The day temperature is likely to stay around 40-42 degrees Celsius on Sunday and Monday, and it may hover around 38-40 degrees Celsius from April 29 to May 2.
The air quality, meanwhile, continued to remain in the poor category with an air quality index of (AQI) of 247.
