Silchar: Jaggu Bhagwanpuria — a notorious gangster and drug lord accused in the Sidhu Moosewala murder case — was transferred on Sunday under heavy security from Bathinda high-security jail to Silchar Central Jail via Chandigarh and Kolkata. He was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) of Punjab.
Cachar SP Numal Mahatta, while confirming the transfer, said the drug lord is now lodged in the Silchar Central Jail.
Bhagwanpuria, whose real name is Jagdeep Singh, hails from Bhagwanpur village in Gurdaspur of Punjab. He is infamous for his involvement in cross-border narcotics smuggling along the India-Pakistan border. Even during his imprisonment for multiple NDPS-related cases, he allegedly continued orchestrating
drug trafficking, extortion, and violent activities through encrypted communications and a vast network of operatives.
With 128 cases against him, including 12 under the NDPS Act, Bhagwanpuria's criminal record is staggering. Investigations revealed his use of smuggled mobile devices to coordinate supply chains from jail. Testimonies from co-accused individuals have further confirmed his leadership role in Punjab's illicit drug trade.
His activities also involve the seizure of illegal firearms, including pistols, revolvers, and ammunition, linking him to Pakistan-based suppliers and international networks in Canada and the US. Highlighting the transnational nature of his operations and the risks posed to India's internal security, the Govt of India's joint secretary (PIT-NDPS) issued a directive on March 21, 2025, for his immediate transfer to Silchar jail.
