My role has changed this year, says Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson
Jaipur: Leading a relatively young side, Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson looks to have adopted a more calculative approach, tailoring his role to the team's needs. This year, the 30-year-old IPL veteran appears to be more cautious than instinctive. Samson agreed ‘his role has changed'.
"My role has definitely changed. It changes with every team you play. When I play for the Indian team, we are batting deep and we are expected to go hard from ball one, but here our team combination is such where we need a different approach. But I am experienced enough to do that. And I am also experienced enough to take care of a young unit," he said in a pre-match press conference here on Saturday.
Samson feels that Royals head coach Rahul Dravid's presence will benefit the youngsters in the side. "Royals are in the right hands with Rahul sir and other coaching staff to take care of the youngsters. So, I feel we are doing good," he added.
The Royals skipper mentioned that though the team looks young, many of the players have reasonable experience both at the international level and at IPL.
"Yes, this time we have a much younger side and definitely there are a lot of positives about it. They look young in age but if you look at their match experience, then most of them have played international cricket and a reasonable amount of IPL also. I don't think they are young in the cricketing aspect," he said.
While batting I don't see myself as the captain, says RCB captain Patidar
RCB's new captain Rajat Patidar is looking in great touch this season and has contributed substantially to the team's cause. He believes that things are going his way because he avoids leadership pressure at the crease.
"While fielding I see myself as a captain, but while batting, I don't take that pressure and instead focus on my batting strength. When I go out to bat, I don't like to think that I am the captain and that is why I have to do things differently," said Patidar, who has so far amassed 186 runs in five games at a strike rate of 161.74.
Patidar also acknowledged Virat Kohli for his input. "Virat is a very senior player who has led the Indian team and RCB as well. His experience, his input and his ideas regarding captaincy and individual growth are really helpful. Also, he does share his ideas, but it doesn't mean that he is leading the side," he stated.
