West Bengal schools to begin summer vacation early from April 30 due to rising heat and humidity

West Bengal Education Department will advance summer vacation in state-run schools to April 30 due to rising temperatures and humidity, announces Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Instead of starting in mid-May, the break will now begin for primary, secondary, and higher secondary institutions earlier to protect students from increasing heat, with temperatures already reaching 34.4 degrees Celsius.

KOLKATA: Amidst rising temperatures and humid conditions, the West Bengal Education Department has announced that summer vacation for state-run schools will begin on April 30, as confirmed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday. Speaking to journalists at the state secretariat, Nabanna, Banerjee explained that, contrary to the usual practice of declaring summer vacation in the second week of May, the department will issue a notice advancing the start date to April 30 for primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools.
"The Education Department will issue the notice to this effect later," she said.
The city recorded a maximum of 34.4 degree Celsius on Thursday, as mercury levels had been steadily rising over the past week.
"It is expected to rise further in the coming days, with no rain or Nor'wester forecast in the immediate future", according to the weather office.
