He is one of the most powerful directors in contemporary India. And come January, a documentary will be made on Buddhadeb Dasgupta. Produced by the Films Division of India, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the docu will be directed by Supriya Suri. Talking about the project, Supriya says, I have been greatly inspired by films like
Kaalpurush,
Uttara,
Mondo Meyer Upakhyan, among many others, and my association with him goes back a long way.
Though his films have been the toast of numerous international festivals, the Indian audiences need to sit back and take note of his works. The focus of the docu will primarily be on the directors films the lateral tracks in his movies, the use of sound and imagery et al.
Being a poet himself, Buddhadeb Dasguptas films are replete with imagery. Well talk about dreams and the extension of reality in his movies. Also, focus will be on his inspirations, Tagore being one of them, she adds.
Supriya was set to shoot the docu in April, this year, but stopped short of it because of a sudden bout of illness. I also wanted to shoot how he approaches a film by being on the sets of his Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer
Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa. But because of the ailment, I couldnt do so. In January, Ill be in Kolkata to shoot the docu. Currently, Im working on the script, which I hope will be wrapped up soon.
