Construction has begun on a 180-foot statue of the Virgin Mary in Konotopie, Poland. Once completed, it is expected to be the tallest religious structure of its kind, according to Wirtalny Toruń, the tourism group associated with the project.
The statue itself will stand 133.2 feet tall and will be placed on a 50-foot-high pedestal shaped like a crown. The crown will serve as an observation deck and a place of pilgrimage.
A faith resource site, CatholicsComeHome.org, describes Mary as “the model of perfect love and obedience to Christ” and states that “God preserved Mary from sin, and she conceived our Lord by the power of the Holy Spirit, bringing Christ into our world.”
According to a press release from Wirtalny Toruń, the statue's location holds deep meaning. “The location of the monument to the Virgin Mary is not accidental,” the group stated. “It will stand in close proximity to the existing Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Konotopie.”
The site has long been a place of pilgrimage, home to a revered figure of Our Lady of Sorrows that has drawn visitors from across the Dobrzyń Land for years.
Once completed, the Virgin Mary statue will be taller than several well-known religious landmarks. Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, stands nearly 100 feet tall, while Christ the King in Świebodzin, Poland, reaches 108 feet.
For comparison, the Statue of Liberty in New York City, the tallest statue in the U.S., is 151 feet tall and was designed to resemble the Roman goddess Libertas, according to news outlet
The Collector. The construction of Mary’s statue is expected to take around 18 months to complete.
