UP students design SOS sandals for women safety

Two school students from Uttar Pradesh have created a unique invention aimed at enhancing women’s safety: a sandal with an integrated SOS alert feature. This practical and affordable solution could potentially save lives, and the minds behind it are none other than Amrit Tiwari and Komal Jaiswal, students at RPIC School in Siswa Bazar, Maharajganj district, according to a News18 report.
A clever design with a life-saving purpose
The sandal comes with a hidden SOS button placed discreetly under the toe. This button, when pressed, triggers an emergency alert, sending a distress signal to the user’s pre-programmed contacts, such as family or friends. This simple yet effective design addresses the pressing need for a quick and accessible way to alert others in case of danger.

The innovation was developed with a clear focus on practicality and ease of use, ensuring that it could be operated by anyone in distress, even if they are unable to reach for their phone.
Real-time alerts and additional features
The sandal connects to a mobile app, letting the wearer share their location and send audio. This helps those receiving the alert hear what’s happening around the wearer, making it easier to understand how serious the situation is.
As per media reports, Amrit Tiwari, one of the inventors, shared, “We have developed an application that connects the technology in the sandal to the phone. In the future, we plan to install a camera in the sandal, so that the surrounding sound, location, and visuals can also be shared.” This feature has the potential to provide even more information for people responding to emergencies.
Built-in safety with a defensive mechanism
Perhaps one of the most innovative aspects of the sandal is its self-defense feature. The sandal has the ability to deliver a small electric shock strong enough to incapacitate an attacker temporarily, offering a layer of protection without causing any lasting harm. This unique safety measure makes the sandals not only a tool for communication but also a means of personal defense.

According to the reports, Komal Jaiswal, the other student behind the project, explained, “Our goal is to make safety something that is both affordable and effective.” This emphasizes the practical, everyday purpose of the sandal, designed to protect women without complicating their daily lives.

One of the standout qualities of this innovation is its affordability. Priced at just ₹2,500, the sandal offers an accessible safety solution for women of various economic backgrounds. The reasonable price point ensures that it can be widely distributed, making it an appealing option for anyone seeking extra protection.
As per media reports, the design has already caught the attention of India’s Science and Technology Department, which sees great potential in this development and is considering supporting its future progress.
