Yankees manager Aaron Boone gives cryptic reply when asked about moving Cody Bellinger down the roster

Cody Bellinger's subpar performance since joining the New York Yankees has raised concerns, leading to questions about his position in the lineup. Manager Aaron Boone is considering adjustments to the roster, hinting at a potential move for Bellinger down the batting order. Despite a slow start with a .177 average, the team hopes he can recapture his 2023 form.

The 2025 season turned out to be a mix of controversies for the New York Yankees, but they still managed to perform. From Torpedo bats to their star player switching to the Mets, the team has supposedly seen everything. Or has it? It seems like the recent addition to the Yankees, Cody Bellinger, who was traded from the Chicago Cubs, has been under the radar due to his poor performance.
In the meantime, questions have been raised regarding Bellinger's position on the roster. What was Aaron Boone’s reaction? Will the Yankees really move Bellinger down the roster? We have the details here.

Aaron Boone on tinkering with the Yankees roster

The below-average performance of Cody Bellinger is something that one cannot turn a blind eye to. When the Athletic’s reporter, Brendan Kuty, asked the Yankees manager regarding the same, questioning whether there are any plans of moving Bellinger down the roster, Boone gave a cryptic reply,
“We'll see. I'll consider everything. Trying to find that balance, of course. Still expecting him [Cody Bellinger] to end up hitting somewhere in the middle of the lineup. But yeah. You can always tinker with things as you move forward, depending on what you've got that day.”
Does this mean that Bellinger will be moved down the roster? From the moment Cody joined the New York Yankees, he has never batted below the 4th, and now that things are getting tough for the player, chances of seeing Bellinger in the middle order are high.

Besides, who knows, maybe having Bellinger in the middle order might ignite his potential as it is well-known how much pressure the top order has to handle. It might release some pressure from his shoulders.

Cody Bellinger's performance with the New York Yankees

The New York Yankees signed Cody Bellinger in December 2024, during the player's trade option. The Yankees traded Cody Poteet with the Chicago Cubs to get Bellinger on their team. Bellinger was signed by the Yankees for two seasons with a 2026 opt-out option.

Coming to Bellinger’s stats, the 2019 MVP has not been performing up to mark after joining the Yankees. Since the beginning of the season, Cody had 79 at-bats that resulted in 21 strikeouts, 14 hits, 2 home runs, and just 12 RBIs.

The stats are pretty bat, with Cody’s hitting average coming down to .177, second to his career’s lowest batting average. However, Cody has proved himself time and again, by receiving the National League Comeback Player of the Year in 2023, when he had a slash line of .307/.356/.525. Will Bellinger be able to revive the magic of 2023? Only time will tell.
