With summer season now in peak mode, issues like an upset stomach will now be a regular occurence, since due to the heat, food tends to spoil really quickly, and water too, can be contaminated. However, while a one off runny stomach can be bearable, a full blown diarrhea/stomach pain can really throw life out of gear, but before you reach out for those medicines, here are some desi home remedies you can try.
Ajwain, or carom seeds, is a staple in our kitchens, and is a go-to remedy for indigestion, gas, and bloating. The enzymes in ajwain help improve digestion and reduce discomfort. For quick relief from stomach pain, take a teaspoon of ajwain with a pinch of black salt and swallow it with warm water. This combination can help release trapped gas and ease stomach pain.
Curd is rich in probiotics that restores the balance of good bacteria in your gut, making it especially effective for diarrhea and loose motions. Mixing curd with isabgol (psyllium husk) helps absorb excess water in the intestines and adds bulk to the stool. For best results, take a bowl of fresh curd, add a tablespoon of isabgol, mix well, and eat it after meals.
Ginger is a powerful anti-inflammatory and helps reduce nausea, cramps, and indigestion. You can chew a small piece of fresh ginger, or make ginger tea by boiling sliced ginger in water. Mint (pudina) also has calming properties and can relieve stomach pain. For a soothing drink, mix mint juice, ginger juice, and a little lime juice with water and a pinch of black salt. Drink this for quick relief from stomach discomfort.
Fennel seeds are known for their digestive properties, but they can also reduce bloating. You can chew a teaspoon of fennel seeds or make fennel tea by boiling the seeds in water. Fennel seeds soaked overnight in water can also be consumed the next morning for relief from stomach ache and indigestion.
When your stomach feels weak, eating heavy food can make things worse. Rice water is a gentle, soothing drink that helps harden the stools and prevents dehydration. To make rice water, boil rice in extra water, strain, and drink the water after it cools. Eating light meals like khichdi, and curd is also recommended, as it is easy to digest and provides energy without irritating your stomach.
