Tetra Pak introduces certified recycled polymers in packaging ahead of government mandate

Tetra Pak has become the first company in India’s food and beverage packaging industry to introduce packaging material with certified recycled polymers, ahead of new regulatory requirements set to take effect in April 2025.
The company’s carton packages now integrate 5% certified recycled polymers, in line with the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2022, mandated by the Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change. These packages are certified under ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification), a globally recognised sustainability certification system.
By launching this initiative ahead of the mandate, Tetra Pak is reinforcing its focus on circularity, reducing dependence on fossil-based materials, and promoting increased recycling. The recycled content is sourced locally, with packaging materials produced at the company’s ISCC PLUS-certified facility in Pune.
“This is an opportunity for the food and beverage industry to collaborate and transition toward more circular solutions,” said Cassio Simões, Managing Director, Tetra Pak South Asia. “Our goal is to ensure all our packaging is made from renewable or recycled polymers, reducing reliance on fossil feedstock.”
The use of recycled materials aligns with global trends promoting sustainability and could help increase recycling rates by driving demand for recycled content. With this step, Tetra Pak is setting a precedent in the industry, demonstrating early adoption of sustainable solutions even before regulatory deadlines come into effect.
