BJP criticises Congress govt’s threats to opposition leaders in Vimal Negi case
Shimla: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit of Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday said the Congress govt is so rattled that it is not only engaging in political rhetoric to suppress the opposition's voice, especially regarding the CBI probe into the Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) general manager Vimal Negi's mysterious death case, but also threatening to file cases and bring privilege motions against the opposition leaders.
"This behaviour is a clear insult to democratic values and indicates that the govt is operating with a dictatorial mindset," said Rakesh Jamwal, state BJP chief spokesperson and MLA from Sundernagar. He claimed that not only the public but even the officials within the Congress govt are not safe, as the suspicious death of an honest officer like Negi has shaken the entire state. "This is not a simple matter as it reflects the rotten system that does not allow honest and dutiful officers to survive," said Jamwal. He added that when questions were raised about this death, instead of providing answers, the govt started issuing threats.
The BJP legislator said the biggest question is why the govt is avoiding a CBI probe when Negi's own family is demanding it. "If the govt is truly innocent, why is it afraid of a CBI probe? Is it worried that a major revelation might occur during the investigation?" he questioned.
Jamwal said the questions raised by the BJP are factual and within constitutional limits. When various questions were posed to the govt, panchayati raj minister Anirudh Singh became agitated and started labelling public representatives as conspirators, he added. This mindset points towards dictatorship, where the govt wants to dictate who can say what, said Jamwal. The BJP legislator questioned the govt on why the post-mortem report had not been made public yet, why the officials facing serious harassment charges were not behind bars, and why the govt remained silent despite the high court highlighting the seriousness of the case.
