Ex-DSP Meena, hotelier convicted in Rs 70L bribery case
Chandigarh: In a decade-old bribery case, a special CBI court on Friday convicted former UT Police DSP R C Meena and KLG Hotel owner Aman Grover. The court will announce sentencing on Saturday.
Meena was arrested by the CBI in 2015 for demanding Rs 70 lakh bribe from the daughter of the owner of Chawla Petrol Pump in Sector 22. Out of this amount, Rs. 40 lakh was meant for Meena, while the remaining sum was to be handed over to Grover.
According to the CBI, Meena and Grover demanded the bribe from Guneet Kaur, a resident of Sector 9, to prevent the arrest of her family in a fraud case. The case was registered on December 26, 2014, based on a complaint by a woman named Deepa Duggal.
Upon receiving the complaint from Kaur, the CBI set up a trap and caught the accused red-handed while accepting the bribe.
Initially, Sanjay Dahuja, owner of Berkeley Company, was also named in the case, but he later turned approver for the prosecution. Additionally, sub-inspector Surinder Kumar of the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Chandigarh Police was also accused, but the case against him was closed following his demise.
Following their conviction on Friday, both Meena and Grover were taken into custody by the CBI. The court will now announce the quantum of their punishment on March 29.
