NEW DELHI: Controversial pastor Bajinder Singh, sentenced to life by a Mohali court on Tuesday for sexually assaulting a woman, was popular among his followers as 'Papa ji'.
Anil Sagar, the victim’s lawyer, expressed satisfaction with the verdict, emphasizing the severity of the crime committed by a man who was once revered as a spiritual leader.
"He was popular as a spiritual leader. His followers used to call him 'Papa ji'. When such a crime is committed by a person in his position, an exemplary punishment must be given," said Sagar. "We are satisfied with the quantum of the sentence, which is life imprisonment. He has to stay behind bars until his last breath."
The woman had demanded strict punishment for Pastor Bajinder Singh, also known as Yeshu-Yeshu prophet, ahead of his sentencing.
In July 2018, Bajinder Singh was arrested at Delhi airport while attempting to flee to London.
Since then, he has been embroiled in multiple legal battles, including another sexual harassment case filed earlier this year.
Following his conviction, two more women came forward, accusing the pastor of sexual abuse and exploitation at his dera.
They also approached Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj, the officiating jathedar of Akal Takht, seeking his intervention.
In a press release, the Akal Takht secretariat confirmed that FIRs had been lodged against Singh but alleged delays in police action. The victims claimed they had been threatened and intimidated despite filing legal complaints. Gargajj called on the Punjab government to take strict action and ensure the women's safety. He also praised their bravery and assured them of Akal Takht’s support.
