NEW DELHI: A 22-year-old woman who accused Pastor Bajinder Singh of sexual assault appeared before the National Commission for Women (NCW) in New Delhi on Tuesday for a hearing, officials said.
Singh, a 42-year-old self-styled Christian preacher from a church in Punjab's Jalandhar district, faces charges of sexual harassment based on the woman's complaint.
The woman alleged in her police complaint that Singh sent her text messages and made her sit alone in a church cabin on Sundays, where he inappropriately touched her.
Police have filed a case against the pastor under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including sexual harassment, stalking, and criminal intimidation.
NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar had previously called for quick action from Punjab Police in the case on March 7.
"The case involving a pastor from Punjab that has come to light is a very serious and concerning matter. The way the woman was sexually assaulted is deeply concerning. However, we have not stopped at just acknowledging this, we have taken suo-motu cognisance of the incident and asked the Punjab Police what action they will take," Rahatkar had said.
The NCW officials confirmed the woman's appearance before the commission for a hearing on Tuesday.
