COIMBATORE: As many as 18 goats were mauled to death by an unidentified animal near Annur in Coimbatore district on Sunday night.
Two other goats were found missing from the herd, raising doubts that they might have been dragged into the forest by the predator.
Farmer Ravikumar said he was shocked to see the carcasses of the goats strewn across his field in Ottarpalayam village. There were bite marks on the carcasses and the heads of two goats were missing, he added.
Ravikumar informed the village seniors who in turn alerted the forest officials. A team from Sirumugai forest division visited the farm and inspected the site. However, they were unable to identify the predator.
Forest officials have installed camera traps in the village to identify the animal.
