Supermarket in Coimbatore gutted in major fire, probe on
Coimbatore: A major fire broke out at a supermarket on Nanjundapuram Road in the city late on Saturday night. Fire and rescue services personnel put out the fire after a two-hour long battle.
Police said the incident took place at Balaji Home Needs, around 10.30pm, half an hour after the supermarket had closed for business. A passerby noticed the fire around 10.50pm and alerted the fire and rescue services personnel. Two fire tenders from the Coimbatore South fire station reached the spot within ten minutes. Fire brigades led by additional district fire officer Ramachandran were engaged in the firefighting operation.
"Deodorant bottles stocked up in the shop, exploded in the fire, aggravating the situation," said a fire officer. He added that the supermarket was gutted completely in the fire.
Meanwhile more than 100 people gathered at the spot to watch the firefighting operations. A team of police officers from the Ramanathapuram police station were deployed at the spot to manage the crowd.
Ramanathapuram police have registered a case and are investigating further.
