RUDRAPUR: An Anganwadi worker from Sitarganj in Udham Singh Nagar was caught red-handed by a vigilance team from Haldwani on Monday while accepting a bribe of Rs 2,000 from a scheme beneficiary.
The accused, Kamlesh Rani, in-charge of the Anganwadi Centre in Ward No 4, had allegedly demanded the bribe for processing documents under the Nanda Gaura Yojana, a state scheme offering Rs 40,000 to girls who clear the intermediate board exam from govt schools.
The complainant said although the amount had already been credited to the beneficiary’s account on March 28, Kamlesh kept pressuring him, threatening that future benefits would be withheld and past assistance revoked unless the bribe was paid.
A trap team led by deputy SP Anil Singh Manral was formed following a preliminary investigation, and Kamlesh was caught in the act outside the complainant’s house.
“A case has been registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act and further investigation is underway,” said vigilance director V Murugesan, who also announced a cash reward for the team and urged citizens to report corruption.
