RUDRAPUR: A man and his son were shot dead while trying to stop the demolition of their shop in Rudrapur's Galla Mandi around 2:30am on Monday. The victims, Gurmeet Singh, 60, and his son Manpreet Singh, 26, collapsed after being shot and were declared dead at the district hospital.
Eyewitnesses said Dinesh Saluja and Awadhesh Saluja, along with 10-15 unidentified men and an earthmover, arrived at Ludhiana Agro Traders to demolish the structure. The guard on duty alerted Gurmeet, who checked the live CCTV feed and rushed to the scene with his sons, Surendra Singh and Manpreet Singh. As soon as they approached, the attackers opened fire. Surendra narrowly escaped unhurt. Police launched an investigation, and a forensic team collected evidence from the scene.
After the shooting, Dinesh Saluja, with a gunshot wound to his leg, reached the police station seeking help. He was taken into custody and admitted to the district hospital. Police registered a case against Dinesh, Awadhesh and 10-15 unidentified persons under Section 103 and other sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Weapons used in the attack were seized, and investigations are underway.
Police said a property dispute between Gurmeet Singh of Ishwar Colony and Dinesh and Awadhesh of Model Colony had been simmering for some time. In his complaint, Surendra Singh said, "We had initially rented the shop and later purchased it for Rs 48 lakh. When we tried to stop the illegal demolition, they threatened us and opened fire indiscriminately."
SSP Manikant Mishra said, "It was a serious and premeditated attack. The gunshot injury sustained by Dinesh Saluja is also being investigated to determine if it was self-inflicted or happened during the crossfire. The strictest action will be taken to ensure justice. The accused have been identified and will be arrested soon. Additional police forces have been deployed to maintain law and order."
Meanwhile, Sikh religious organisations refused to cremate Gurmeet and Manpreet until the accused were arrested. Sardar Tejender Singh said, "We will not perform the last rites of our brothers until every accused is arrested. This is not just a murder of two individuals — it is an attack on the dignity of the entire community."
