Bageshwar: A 28-year-old tourist from Punjab drowned while bathing in the Kosi River near Mehatgaon in Almora district on Saturday.
The deceased, identified as Manish Kumar, was a resident of Shakti Nagar in Mohali, Punjab. He had travelled to Almora with a group of seven friends for a leisure trip. The group entered the river near the Someshwar police station area for a swim, unaware of the river's depth and strong currents.
Eyewitnesses said that Manish was swept away shortly after stepping into the water. Despite efforts by his friends, he could not be saved. The incident was immediately reported to local authorities. A rescue operation was launched by police personnel from the Someshwar station, with assistance from local residents. Manish was pulled from the river and taken to the base hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Police said Manish was a professional videographer and video editor. Almora SHO Yogesh Chandra Upadhyay said, "The inquest proceedings are currently underway, and the body has been sent for post-mortem."
