Panaji: The directorate of education issued a circular on Friday stating that the new academic year 2025-26 for Classes VI to X and for Class XII will begin from April 7. The directorate also issued the final notification amending school education rules to change the start of the new academic year to April each year, for these classes.
The notification was issued after the period to receive objections and suggestions ended.
Earlier the classes for Classes VI to X and XII were to begin from April 1, but after a group of parents approached the high court, state govt agreed to give students a week’s break after the old academic year ends.
The directorate has said that classes in April will be held till 11.30am, as notified to schools earlier.
There will be five weeks of summer vacations and schools will reopen in June.
“For Classes I to V and Class XI: As per Amended Rule 21 of Goa School Education Rule, 1986, the school will re-open on June 4, for the academic year 2025-26. Terms, vacations and breaks will remain the same as that for Classes VI to X and Class XIl,” the directorate said.
The new notification amends the Goa School Education Rules, 1986.
“The academic year for Classes VI to X and Class XII shall ordinarily commence from April and shall end in March: Provided that there shall be a break of one week between the end of the academic year and the beginning of the new academic year for this category. There shall be a summer vacation of five weeks for all classes from May 1 as may be specified by the director of education,” states the notification.
The circular states that first summative/first-term examination will be held so as to end on Oct 7 and second sumnıative/second terminal examination will be held preferably by March 13, 2026. The final annual examination results shall not be declared before April 4, 2026, the circular states.
