Calangute: An olive ridley turtle laid 98 eggs on Calangute beach on Monday night. “Tourist security force staff, while patrolling on Monday, spotted an olive ridley turtle laying eggs on the beach. They immediately informed the forest department, and the eggs were safely handed over to forest guards for safety,” police said, describing it as “a small act of alertness that led to a big step in preserving marine life”.
The eggs were later shifted to the turtle nesting site at Morjim. This is the third incident of a turtle laying eggs on Calangute-Candolim beach this tourist season.
In Feb, a turtle laid 126 eggs and returned to the sea. It was also spotted by the tourist security force staff.
Turtles have started arriving again on the Calangute-Candolim beach stretch after shacks were made to shut down at 10pm following some incidents of violence.
