GUWAHATI: Farmers' leader Akhil Gogoi once again reminded people to vote candidates with clean images to power for ensuring a fight against corruption, a day before 62 constituencies in the state are going for polls.
"We have reminded people to cast their votes in favour of candidates who have a clean image and a will to fight corruption," said Akhil in a press meet in the city.
The farmers' leader criticized Congress policies that allegedly restricted growth and development in the state and catered to the interest of private corporations, which were allowed to do business in the health and agriculture sector.
Akhil also alleged that large scale corruption in every sector had led to a halt in the state's development.
The KMSS leader added that most of the paddy fields were yet to be irrigated although a total sum of Rs 60,000 crores have been released by the Centre since the country's Independence for proper irrigation of the fields.
Akhil said, "Some ministers and their like-minded officers were involved in misappropriation of people's money released by the Centre for implementation of irrigation schemes."
Akhil urged people not to be lured by false promises being made to them by corrupt politicians during poll campaigns. "Many corrupt politicians are trying to lure voters. But, we again appeal to people to cast their votes judiciously and not to be lured by corrupt candidates," said Akhil.
While talking to the media recently, the peasant leader had said, "Many corrupt politicians are in the fray. They will try to influence people with their black money. We request people not to be fooled by them.
He had vowed that the KMSS would approach the Election Commission with an appeal to deal firmly with politicians and ministers who were facing corruption charges.
He alleged that some ministers in the state "have been earning huge amount of money illegally during the rule of Congress and they will use the it to win the elections". He added, "Some ministers have enough wealth to influence people." The RTI activist accused chief minister
Tarun Gogoi of not doing enough to stop corruption in the state.
"The chief minister on various occasions has conceded to corruption in the state. But we have not yet seen him taking stern steps to curb the menace. He also did not take any step against ministers who facing corruption charges," he said.
