Koppal: Despite Koppal's proximity to the
Tungabhadra reservoir, which provides water to several districts, the city is facing major water supply issues.
This recurring problem, from summer through the annual monsoon season, has created widespread discontent among residents. The summer months particularly witness frequent public outbursts against the municipality due to inconsistent water distribution.
On Tuesday, residents of Bhovi Colony staged a protest against unreliable water supply. They raised concerns about the lack of proper water distribution planning, particularly given the city's location near the Tungabhadra reservoir.
According to municipality officials, water is currently delivered once a week to Bhovi Colony and adjacent areas in Ward-4, home to many daily wage labourers. However, residents voiced their frustrations over the absence of a clear timetable by the city municipal council, indicating when water will be made available.
"Each day involves a struggle to secure water. Currently, we have been receiving water only once a week, and the amount provided is insufficient. This situation affects our ability to manage our daily activities," stated Durugamma Bhovivaddar, a protester.
Deputy commissioner Nalin Atul and ZP CEO Rahul Ratnam Pandey conducted several meetings with officers concerned to confront the water scarcity problem in the district. "We must identify villages and areas in urban pockets at risk of water shortage, locate viable water sources, and take necessary action to provide water to those in need. Officials will be held accountable for any water issues that arise," they warned.
Despite this situation, Koppal municipality has not implemented efficient measures to tackle the problem. The residents of Bhovi Colony, frustrated by the municipality's weak response to the water crisis, staged a protest on Tuesday by placing empty water pots on the road. They voiced their disappointment regarding the lack of engagement from senior officials in addressing their issues.
