HUBBALLI: The Karnataka forest department has initiated an ambitious project to transform the long-neglected 33-acre forest land in Hubballi into a vibrant tree park. The development will showcase indigenous flora and create a green lung space for the city's residents.
The tree park project represents a significant step towards urban greening and environmental conservation in Hubballi. It will serve as an educational resource for schools and colleges while providing a recreational space for the public. The initiative aligns with the state's commitment to increase green cover and promote environmental awareness among citizens. The tree park is expected to become a model for similar projects in other cities of Karnataka.
Vivek Kawari, deputy conservator of forest, Dharwad, said that in 2024-25, a new arboretum will be under development in the Gokul forest area within Hubballi's regional zone. The initiative, undertaken under forest minister Ishwar Khandre's guidance, is situated merely 700m from Hubballi airport, making it accessible for travelling pilgrims.
Positioned in Hubballi city's centre, this recreational space will serve as a leisure destination for residents, particularly children and women. The site selection was carried out by D Yatish Kumar, chief conservator of forests, Dharwad circle and received subsequent approval from minister Khandre following their site inspection.
The facility will feature children's play equipment, senior citizens' exercise stations, walking trails, and dedicated yoga platforms for women. The development includes gender-specific sanitation facilities, potable water provisions, a cafeteria, and an amphitheatre. Additionally, the Dharwad forest department is developing distinctive Rashi Vana (horoscope-based tree park) and Nakshatra Vana (stars-based tree park). This comprehensive development is positioned to become a model recreational facility, featuring aesthetically designed structures that will appeal to visitors.
The tree park will have basic amenities like toilets, drinking water facilities, and rest areas. Solar-powered lighting will be installed along the pathways to ensure visitor safety and promote sustainable practices. The authorities plan to create designated spots for outdoor activities and nature education programmes.
"The state budget has approved the project, allocating an initial Rs 3 crore. Construction is scheduled for 2024-25, with completion targeted for 2028-29," added Kawari.
