MAHBUBNAGAR: In a bizarre incident a man committed suicide after his name did not figure in the voters' list when he went to polling booth to cast his vote in zilla parishad elections on Sunday.
The incident took place at Sheshampally village of Maladhakal mandal in Mahbubnagar district. The man also felt humiliated over a policeman dragging him out of the polling booth after he entered into heated argument with polling officials questioning why his name was deleted.
1x1 polls

According to villagers, Jayanna (30), resident of Sheshampally village, went to the local polling station to cast his vote in ZPTC and MPTC elections on Sunday afternoon. He waited in a serpentine queue under the hot summer sun for almost an hour. But when his turn came, he was shocked to hear from polling personnel that his name did not figure in the electoral list. The polling booth is about three km from his residence.
Jayanna refused to leave the polling booth arguing that he had enrolled himself as a voter and exercised franchise in earlier polls. He also reportedly told the polling staff that he would cast his vote and then leave the polling station. This led to heated argument between the staff and Jayanna.
A policeman on duty allegedly dragged Jayanna out of the polling booth. The cop also attacked Jayanna and beat him severely even as other villagers watched helplessly.
A humiliated Jayanna returned home and consumed pesticide. He died while being shifted to hospital.
Mahbubnagar district collector M Girija Shankar alleged that Jayanna came to the polling station under the influence of alcohol. "He was inebriated. The polling staff objected him when he barged into the polling booth for the second time and being sent away," he said.
A pall of gloom descended on the village after Jayanna's suicide. Villagers demand action against the policeman and inquiry into the missing of Jayanna's name from the voter's list.
