Hyderabad: Hyderabad is getting louder by the day, and it's not just the honking. A recent study by the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H) in collaboration with The Times of India (TOI) revealed that noise levels across the city have skyrocketed, far exceeding permissible limits and creating an environment of constant chaos. From relentless traffic congestion to unregulated construction, Hyderabad's noise levels have touched deafening heights with some areas recording above 100 dB—nearly as loud as a rock concert.
According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) norms, the maximum permissible noise level in residential areas is 55 dB during the day and 45 dB at night.
The IIIT-TOI study measured noise levels along three different stretches: Gachibowli to Jeedimetla, Gachibowli to Uppal and Gachibowli to Falaknuma — all via Hussain Sagar — to identity the worst noise pollution hotspots.
"The findings show that noise pollution in Hyderabad far exceeds CPCB limits, especially in residential and industrial zones. The highest levels were observed in traffic-heavy areas and market hubs. The study found that noise pollution peaks during rush hours, with evenings being noisier than mornings. Morning hours (9 am to 1 pm) saw noise levels ranging from 50 dB to over 100 dB, with Gachibowli – Jeedimetla recording the highest spikes. Evening hours (3:30 pm to 8 pm) saw noise levels surge beyond 110 dB, with Gachibowli – Uppal experiencing the most noise escalations," said Sachin Chaudhari, professor at IIIT-H.
While admitting to the menace, officials of the Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TGPCB) said that its role is to maintain noise pollution data, and the issue requires collective effort from multiple departments to be tackled. "The main sources of noise pollution are traffic, honking, and construction activities, which fall under the responsibilities of departments like TGRTC, GHMC, etc. Our role is to provide data that can be used to develop effective solutions," said a senior TGPCB official.
