Hyderabad: Deputy chief minister Bhatti Vikramarka assured the state assembly that the govt is taking all necessary measures to meet the growing power demand, with a focus on providing quality and sustainable energy. He highlighted that peak demand, which was 13,668 MW in 2021, increased to 15,497 MW in 2022-23, and reached 17,162 MW in March 2025.
Addressing energy sector developments, Vikramarka, who also oversees the energy department, said that the Congress govt is focused on meeting the future power needs of key areas such as the outer ring road, regional ring road, Future City, and the IT sector, including data centres. The state has also unveiled a new energy policy to cater to these evolving requirements, he explained.
Vikramarka projected that the peak power demand would reach 24,215 MW by 2029-30 and 31,809 MW by 2034-35. To meet future demands and ensure green energy, the govt has entered agreements with Rajasthan for solar and thermal power plants, he said.
Additionally, a hydel power generation agreement is being made with a neighbouring state. The second unit of the Yadadri thermal power plant has also been commissioned, and a 500 MW battery storage power plant is being developed in Shankarpally.
The govt is also working on strengthening the city's power infrastructure, setting up new sub-stations and power distribution systems. Vikramarka noted that discoms are being financially supported to implement schemes like Gruha Jyothi, which covers about 50 lakh families.
The deputy CM added that there are 1.94 lakh electricity connections, including 29.14 lakh agricultural connections, which are receiving free power, with the state having paid Rs 11,500 crore in subsidies.
