HYDERABAD: Two retired teachers from Telangana have lost lakhs of rupees to digital extortion. Separate cases were registered on Thursday with the Cybercrime police in Cyberabad and the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) in Khammam.
In the first case, a 64-year-old retired teacher from Khammam lost Rs 26.50 lakh to the fraudsters, who posed as telecommunication officials and law enforcement agencies, between April 4 and 16.
The fraudsters leveled false allegations against her, claiming that she was involved in distributing indecent photographs and making illegal banking transactions. Through a series of threatening calls and fake documents, including fake FIRs and arrest warrants, the fraudsters forced the victim to transfer RS 26.50 lakh to several bank accounts they provided.
Threatening her with arrest, the accused had made the victim liquidate her fixed deposit, mortgage gold jewellery and also made her borrow money from a friend. Unable to bear the threats, the victim even thought about taking personal loan and also asked some relatives for money.
When she asked the relatives for money, they met her and told her that she was being cheated, forcing the victim to approach the police on Thursday. In a similar incident, another 64-year-old retired govt teacher from Old Alwal lost Rs 80.8 lakh to cyber criminals.
The fraudsters, who contacted him on March 7, claiming to be from the Bengaluru police and a CBI SP, claimed that his Aadhaar details were being misused by one Sadakath Khan, an accused in a human trafficking case in Bengaluru.
Between March 10 and April 21, the victim had liquidated his fixed deposits, mortgaged gold and borrowed from friends to transfer Rs 80.8 lakh to the bank accounts provided by the accused.
"They said the entire amount would be returned after verification," said the victim. As the offenders kept asking for more money, he lodged a complaint with the police on Thursday.
Police said both victims were subjected to sophisticated psychological manipulation, including multiple phone calls, WhatsApp video conversations and threats of legal action. Based on the complaints of the victims, the TGCSB Khammam police station and the Cybercrime police station of Cyberabad registered two separate cases under relevant sections of the BNS and IT Act on Thursday.
