JAIPUR: The BJP-led state govt has sparked controversy by renaming the Rajiv Gandhi Shiksha Bhawan to "Punyashloka Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Bhawan", drawing sharp criticism from opposition members.
The building, located in Shiksha Sankul on the JLN Marg, is an educational complex housing educational department's different institutions and administrative offices.
Leader of Opposition (LOP) Tika Ram Jully strongly condemned the move Friday, calling it an example of BJP's "narrow thinking." Taking to X, Jully criticised the decision to rename a building that was established in honour of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who he noted "sacrificed his life for peace in the Indian subcontinent."
Jully recalled that this was not the first time the educational complex has undergone a name change under BJP governance.
The complex was initially named after Rajiv Gandhi in recognition of his contributions to India's education sector, including the introduction of a new education policy and the establishment of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas during his tenure as Prime Minister, the LOP wrote.
Jully took aim at Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma's govt, suggesting that it was focusing on renaming existing projects because "it won't be able to carry out any new construction work in five years."
The renamed building complex is home to several important institutions, including the Vidyarthi Seva Kendra, Vidya Samiksha Kendra, Rajasthan School Education Council, and offices of various universities including Haridev Joshi Journalism University, Vishwakarma Skill University, and Baba Amte Divyang University.
