KANPUR: A 45-year-old man, his wife and three kids died after a major fire broke out in a four-storey building in Gandhi Nagar locality of Chamanganj area in Kanpur city on Sunday night.
"A total of five people have lost their lives in the fire incident, including Danish, his wife, Nazmi Sabha (42) and their three children. The fire has been controlled," said a police officer.
Late at night, the police recovered the bodies of Danish's two daughters. Earlier, the police retrieved the bodies of Danish, his wife Nazmi Saba, and one of their daughters.
The deceased include Mohammad Danish (45), his wife Nazmi Saba (42), daughter Sara (15), second daughter Simra (12), and a third daughter, Anaya. One daughter's body was found clinging to her mother, a sight that brought tears to everyone's eyes.
Danish owned a six-storey building in Prem Nagar, where only his family and his brother Kasif's family lived. On the ground floor was Danish's factory for making military boots, with a warehouse above it. Shoes were stored on the other floors.
The factory was closed on Sunday. Late at night, a fire broke out in the factory. As the fire spread, the families living in the building fled to save their lives.
Chief Fire Officer Deepak Sharma arrived at the scene with several fire tenders. A 200-metre area was sealed off, and a rescue operation began alongside efforts to extinguish the fire.
Nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution. In addition to ADM Rajesh Singh, more than a dozen police forces from various stations arrived at the scene.
Assistant commissioner of police Tej Bahadur Singh told TOI, "A total of five people lost their lives in the fire incident, including Danish, his wife, and three children. Their bodies have been sent to the mortuary for postmortem. The fire has been controlled, and firefighters are now working on cooling the building to prevent the fire from reigniting."
