Kozhikode: The crime branch team, which is probing the death of tribal boy Gokul while in police custody at Kalpetta station, recorded the statement of those who were on duty when the incident took place. The probe in this case was handed over to a team led by CB-CID deputy SP Suresh Babu.
Gokul, a native of Padivayal colony near Ambalavayal, was taken into custody in connection with the disappearance of a minor girl. He was found hanging in the toilet of the police station on Tuesday morning. It later emerged that he was a minor and there were multiple lapses on the part of the police, including keeping him in police custody. A team of forensic experts, led by Dr PS Sanjai, had examined the toilet at Kalpetta station where the teenager was found hanging on Thursday. State human rights commission has registered a case in connection with the incident.
Meanwhile various tribal organizations have raised a demand to step up protests against alleged police lapses. Activist Ammini K Wayanad said there were suspicions over the boy's death. She added that police, who visited Gokul's home as part of the missing case filed by the minor girl's family, had threatened that he wouldn't see the outside world once the team nabbed him. "They took the mobile phones of two youths at the hamlet," she said.
Tribal, rights activists said police were trying to falsely portray the old cut marks on the body of Gokul to show that he had suicide tendency while it was the name of the girl he had inscribed using a sharp object.
