KOLKATA: Eight cases of malignant malaria have been detected in posh areas like Ballygunge, Southern Avenue and Rashbehari Avenue in south Kolkata.
Following this Kolkata Municipal Corporation health department officer-on-special duty Atanu Mukherjee last week served a showcause notice to a supervisor of borough VIII. Sources in the borough said lack of surveillance on the part of the health department had resulted in rise of malaria cases.
Ironically, the officials were feted last year by the KMC for “effectively carrying out antimalaria programmes.
Malaria is also on the rise in Kalighat, Chetla, Tollygunge, Tiljala, Topsia, Burrabazar, Phears Lane, Rajabazar, Cossipore and Belgacchia in eastern and northern parts of the city. Officials on Monday expressed apprehension that the number of cases could go up if measures were not taken.
