Ludhiana: In the city for a meeting with party workers ahead of the Ludhiana West bypoll,
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal appealed to voters to stop "experimenting with" Punjab and vote for SAD in the forthcoming byelection.
Urging voters to pave the way for the end of "gangster culture," drug menace, and terrorism, he said that the SAD genuinely cared for people of the state. In his address to mediapersons at the residence of SAD candidate Parupkar Singh Ghumman, Sukhbir said, "People of the state have experimented with both the Congress and AAP. Punjab witnessed a steep decline in all parameters, and now, the situation is such that even the common man is not safe. The state needs a decisive govt like the SAD, which will eradicate gangsters and drug traffickers, besides bringing back peace and ensuring communal harmony."
Badal also criticised AAP's Delhi leadership for taking over the Punjab govt. "Right now, Kejriwal and his team, including Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain, have taken over all ministries between themselves. Right from the chief minister's office to the state secretariat, all files are routed through them. They are not only seeing the files but also taking decisions on them, which is illegal and a violation of the Official Secret Act. Due action should be taken against them," he said.
Describing SAD as the "true heir of the state, unlike national parties," he said, "If Punjab goes down, the loss is ours. I appeal to you to strengthen the party in the forthcoming by-election to lay the foundation for the next SAD govt in 2027."
According to Sukhbir, in the forthcoming by-election, the party would focus on its past record of speedy development, catering to each section of society, including farmers, labourers, youth, women, and trade and industry. "The SAD is known for introducing unique social welfare schemes to help the underprivileged, besides creating world-class facilities resulting in the advent of investment in the state."
On a question about the suspension of Punjab Vigilance chief S P S Parmar and two other senior officers on alleged corruption charges, Badal said, "The AAP govt has made it a habit to register cases against officers, besides going for arbitrary postings and transfers if the officers refuse to toe their line. This has happened earlier also, and we witnessed rapid changes at the top level because the officers concerned did not obey illegal orders of the AAP establishment. This is why several officers have chosen to take transfers out of Punjab."
Sukhbir also said that it was the Delhi AAP leaders, including Manish Sisodia and Satyender Jain, who were actually responsible for corruption. Claiming that they were looting Punjab to fill the party's coffers in Delhi, he asserted that the SAD and its candidate, Parupkar Ghumman, would take these issues to the people in the forthcoming by-election.
In response to a query about whether the rebel Akalis would be taken back into the SAD fold, Badal said, "If they want to come back with a clear heart and work to strengthen the party and follow its principles, they will be welcomed back into the party." Besides a few rebel Akali leaders, several members of the AAP women's and youth wing also joined the SAD.
