Madurai:
Southern Railway general manager R N Singh on Wednesday inspected the new Pamban railway bridge and the preparations for its inauguration, which is likely scheduled for April 6. The new bridge will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will also address the inaugural event at Aalayam grounds in Rameswaram after opening the bridge, according to railway officials.
Addressing reporters, Singh said he came to inspect the preparations as well as the remodelling work of Rameswaram station, which is expected to be completed by Sept. The station is being redeveloped at a cost of 95 crore.
A new train, most likely the Rameswaram–Tambaram express, will be flagged off during the function, he added.
The bridge was opened for a coast guard vessel for testing purposes, and a train rake was operated as well.
