Three officials arrested for bribery in Madurai, Virudhunagar
Madurai: The department of vigilance and anti-corruption (DVAC) arrested three officials in Madurai and Virudhunagar while they were collecting bribes on Tuesday.In the incident at Madurai, A Sivakumar, a revenue assistant and bill collector (in charge) at the corporation tax collection centre at ward 99, Harveypatti, was caught red-handed while accepting a 9,000 bribe from V Karthikeyan, the complainant. Sivakumar demanded the bribe from Karthikeyan to facilitate vacant land tax for the complainant's house.The DVAC sleuths trapped Sivakumar with chemically treated currency notes. He was arrested by the DVAC team led by ADSP M Sathyaseelan.In Virudhunagar, DVAC sleuths nabbed a sub-registrar of cooperatives, Murugan, and the writer in his office, Mohan. They demanded 5,000 from Arockiasamy, 72, from SP Pattinam, Ramanathapuram district. The elderly man took a housing loan of 3,000 from Devakottai cooperative society in 1982. The loan was cancelled in 1990.
He approached the sub-registrar office at Virudhunagar to collect the loan cancellation document, but Murugan demanded a 5,000 bribe. Arockiasamy approached DVAC, Virudhunagar, and they trapped Murugan, who collected the money through Mohan. Both of them were arrested by DVAC sleuths.
