MUMBAI: Four people, including two women, were arrested for kidnapping a two-month-old baby boy with the intent to sell him. Vanrai Police analysed the data of 11,000 autorickshaws from across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to track down the prime accused—an auto driver who kidnapped the baby.
Police handed over the baby to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), who will confirm the identity of his parents before handing him over.
The incident occurred on March 2. The baby was asleep with his parents and older siblings at a bus stop in Goregaon East. His parents are street vendors from Gujarat who come to Mumbai to sell their wares.
At 7 am, when the parents woke up, the baby was nowhere to be found. They rushed to Vanrai Police Station and lodged a complaint.
Police checked CCTV footage where they noticed a man in a yellow jacket abduct the child in an auto, but the vehicle number plate was not captured.
Police then analysed data of 11,000 autos in the MMR to track down the culprit's auto to Malwani. He was arrested along with his two wives and an agent who was to pay them Rs 5 lakh for selling the baby. Police rescued the baby before he could be sold.
The investigation was carried out under the supervision of DCP Smita Patil and Senior Inspector Raju Mane by Assistant Inspector Pravin Tupare and Sub Inspectors Indrajit Bhise and Ajit Desai.
