Carcass of elephant found in Arkalgud farmland
Hassan: The carcass of a 25-year-old elephant was found in farmland in Arkalgud taluk in Hassan on Saturday. The forest department officials suspect that the animal might have died of electric shock or due to a gunshot. However, the cause of death is yet to be ascertained.
The carcass was found at Nellaballi village in Mallipattna hobli. The public paid their respects by offering prayers to the elephant. The officials conducted a postmortem, and the final rites were performed on-site, said an officer.
The human-animal conflict between elephants and humans has become alarming in the region. Since last Jan, four people have fallen victim to elephant attacks in Belur and Alur taluks, while two elephants died under suspicious circumstances in Sakleshpur and Arkalgud areas, causing concern.
Villagers withdraw overnight protest
On Friday, Sushilamma was killed in an elephant attack in Belur taluk. Protesting against the attack, locals staged a massive protest on Friday.
The protesters demanded a proper solution to the elephant problem and insisted the forest minister Eshwar Khandre visit the spot. However, MP Shreyas Patel and others promised to capture the elephants, and hence the protest was withdrawn.
Later, a postmortem was conducted, and the body was handed over to the family members of Sushilamma.
