Shivamogga: Just four days after its birth, a calf at Sakrebyle elephant camp died on Monday evening due to insufficient milk from its mother.
Mother Hemavati's young age was cited as the reason for calf's demise. "Usually, an elephant becomes pregnant at the age of 13 to 15 years," DCF (wildlife) Prasanna Krishna Patgar told TOI. The 11-year-old Hemavati's premature pregnancy resulted in insufficient milk production for the newborn. Hemavati even refused to breastfeed the calf, Patgar said.
Despite the efforts of wildlife officials and mahouts to assist with feeding and milk extraction from Hemavati, the calf died from exhaustion and asphyxiation.
Meanwhile, Mahout Ameer, while caring for Hemavati and her calf, sustained minor injuries after he was chased for a kilometre by a wild elephant in the jungle on Monday. Ameer's condition is stable, Patgar said.
