Legacy waste treatment project begins in Madikeri to solve garbage crisis
Madikeri: The city's two-decade-long waste management crisis is likely to end. At Stone Hill in Subramanyanagar, Kodagu-Mysore MP Yaduveer Wadiyar and Madikeri MLA Manthar Gowda initiated the legacy waste treatment project under the Swachh Bharat Mission. MP Yaduveer highlighted that the waste management initiative, launched during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first term, receives tripartite funding—50% from the central govt, 33% from the state, and 17% from the municipal council.
He noted ongoing developments, including water connections under Amrit 2.0 and road repairs through NDRF, while acknowledging the forestry department's technical issues that require resolution.
Manthar Gowda emphasised the comprehensive Rs 12 crore waste management programme covering Madikeri and Kushalnagar. He stressed the importance of scientific waste disposal and community participation, advocating for plastic bottle restrictions and additional funding if required.
SRVK association president Naliyanda Nanaiah acknowledged the efforts of MLA Manthar Gowda, showing interest and requesting. Urban Development Authority chairman Rajesh Yellappa, council members Kalachanda Appanna, Neravanda Anita Poovaiah, commissioner Ramesh, and others were present.
The initiative targets the disposal of 76,636 tonnes of accumulated waste at Stone Hill, with Maharashtra-based contractor Utkarsh Balasaheb Patil awarded the Rs 5.4 crore project. The nine-month programme allows for a potential 30% volume increase. The implementation schedule prioritises maximum waste processing within two months, before June's monsoon arrival.
The scheme extends to Kushalnagar and Virajpet local bodies, with a total allocation of Rs 12.3 crore. The contracted organisation has assured swift clearance at all three locations. |
