Bhujbal opposes renaming of SPPU Nashik sub-centre
Nashik: Former deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal has opposed the demand for renaming Savitribai Phule Pune University's Nashik sub-centre after Veer Savarkar or Bhausaheb Hiray, saying none of them was bigger than the Phules.
Bhujbal expressed concern over the demands for renaming the sub-centre, saying it was not good for the people who were demanding renaming of the sub-centre of a university when this has not been the practice anywhere.
"I fail to understand if there is such a practice anywhere of renaming the sub-centre of any university anywhere. Then why is there such a demand regarding the university dedicated to the social contribution of Savitribai Phule who started the first school for women?" he said.
There are sub-centres of various universities – Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University or Shivaji University of Kolhapur – but there is no such demand for their renaming.
"My question is why is such a demand being made only regarding the sub-centre of SPPU and not others? You can demand the same for sub-centres of other varsities. They are not stalwarts like Savitribai Phule," said Bhujbal.
"I was following up on setting up of the sub-centre. None of people demanding renaming of the sub-centre was seen taking pains for the same. Now, when the building is taking shape, they want to rename it," said Bhujbal.
