Nashik: The forest department has cleared the proposal to allot over 28 hectares required for the construction of the Mamdapur storage tank in Yeola taluka.
The land was allotted after the forest department was provided with alternative land where afforestation will be carried out, thus paving the way for the project.
"The northeastern region of the parched Yeola taluka will get a respite as the water from the storage tank (a small dam) will also reduce dependency on tankers that provide drinking water to the villages. The forest department has cleared state govt's proposal for the exchange of the land required for the construction of the dam," said a senior officer of the water resources department.
The Mamdapur storage tank is in the Yeola taluka, and MLA Chhagan Bhujbal has been instrumental in ensuring the proposal goes through. State govt sanctioned the Rs 15.7crore project, and even the work order was given in 2017 to bring respite to the drought-prone areas.
Mamdapur has the Mamdapur blackbuck conservation reserve, and the land for the small dam happens to be around the reserve. The storage tank will not only help humans but also the wildlife in the area.
"The catchment area of this lake will be 18 sqkm, and the total capacity will be 0.35 TMC (thousand million cubic feet). The length of this tank is 220m, and the proposed spillway will be of 79m. Due to the dam, the land in the Mamdapur area will come under irrigation," the officer added.
This will also help residents of about nine villages in the periphery. The stored water will be used for drinking and agricultural purposes and will bring more than 170 hectares under cultivation.
