Woman dies by suicide
Surat: A 25-year-old woman, Reena alias Tulsi Jariwala, died by suicide in Ambanagar under Khatodara police station area on Saturday. The woman's family accused her husband and in-laws of murder, as they were informed about the the incident five hours after it took place.
The couple had a love marriage, after which the woman was allegedly harassed, and casteist slurs were hurled at her by the man and his family members. The woman's family alleged that the man tried to destroy evidence.
Khatodara police booked the woman's husband, Dhaval Jariwala, and mother-in-law, Jyotsna Jariwala, for abetment under BNS and also under relevant provisions of the Prevention of SC-ST Atrocities Act.
Speaking to the media, her family members alleged that Reena married Jariwala one and a half years ago. She was engaged to a man of her caste three years ago. However, as she was in love with Jariwala, she requested her family to marry him. So, the family broke the engagement and married her off to Jariwala.
"After the marriage, my daughter's in-laws, Jariwala's uncle, two aunties, and other members started harassing her over her caste. They would hurl casteist slurs at her. It was the end of her patience. We do not believe she died by suicide because she was a fighter. We believe she was killed," the victim's father, Deepak Maru, told the media.
Jariwala is an advocate. After marrying Reena in court, he also married her in a community function.
The victim's family alleged that she was subjected to an abortion by Jariwala's family members. The family also alleged that many records were deleted from her social media accounts and mobile phones.
