T'puram: MSC Turkiye, one of the largest container vessels in the world that can carry 24,300 containers, docked at Vizhinjam International Seaport on Tuesday.
An official said the ship arrived as part of commercial operations and is part of the Jade shuttle service MSC launched. It is not known how many containers the ship will be delivering at Vizhinjam.
The arrival of some of the largest container ships shows that Vizhinjam port is a popular destination for MSC. Earlier, minister of ports VN Vasavan said handling 5 lakh 20-foot equivalent units (TEU) containers is a significant milestone for a new port.
"This achievement was reached by Vizhinjam port in a short period. So far, 501,847 TEU of cargo was moved across 246 ships. The projected annual capacity in the first phase is 10 lakh TEU," he said.
"Achieving this milestone in such a short time highlights the importance of Vizhinjam port in the global maritime sector and the efficiency of the Adani Vizhinjam Port authorities," he added.
The MSC Irina, considered to be the biggest container ship in the world, came to Vizhinjam in May. The arrivals of such ships show that the port is deep enough and has the capacity to load and unload the containers without impacting the turnaround time of ships.
