T'puram: The move to reduce the number of general coaches and increase reserved sleeper class coaches on the Madurai-Guruvayur-Madurai (16327/16328) express has inconvenienced several commuters. Commuters from Guruvayur, Ernakulam and Thrissur, rely on this train for work and education travel.
The railways reduced the number of general coaches when its rakes were converted to coaches with centre buffer couplers (CBC), which are automatic and safer.
"The railways should introduce more general coaches because there is already a large crowd in the general coaches on the morning service from Guruvayur," Krishna Kumar P of the Thrissur passenger association said. "It is good that CBC-type coaches are being introduced. But there was a demand from people that the total number of coaches should be increased to 18. The railways retained the total number of coaches as 14 and cut the number of general coaches," he added.
Dipu Ravi of the Kollam-Sengottai railway passengers association said the railways should allow passengers with season tickets and general tickets to board the sleeper coaches on sections like Guruvayur-Ernakulam and Tenkasi-Madurai."TNN
