Varanasi: Five youths were killed and another was severely injured in twin road crashes in Sonbhadra and Jaunpur districts late on Friday.
In Sonbhadra, three bike-borne youths, aged between 15 and 20, died when an unidentified speeding vehicle hit them and fled the scene.
Chopan police station in-charge Vijay Chaurasia said the accident took place near Nayara petrol pump in Patwadh, when they were going to Kota area to attend a wedding party. The deceased were identified as Laxman Gond (20), Chotu Gond (15) and Chandrashekhar Gond (16) of Belch village. Angry over the incident, family members of the deceased along with ocals staged a protest by blocking the road.
In Jaunpur, a speeding pickup van hit a motorcycle at Dharampur market under Gaurabadshahpur police station around 11:30 pm. Inspector Gaurabadshahpur Phoolchand Pandey said two youths, identified as Arjun Chauhan (27) and Vinod Chauhan (33), died on the spot, while Mahesh Chauhan (28) suffered serious injuries. Police rushed him to the district hospital, from where his family shifted him to a private hospital early on Saturday.
The trio was returning from a birthday party in Panchhatiya when the accident occurred. The unidentified pickup driver fled the scene, and a case is being registered against him.
