Amartya Bhattacharyya’s film Adieu Godard just won the Best Feature Film award at the recently concluded Cardiff International Film Festival 2022 which is supported by the Welsh Assembly and Cardiff Council (UK).
The film is a socio-cultural comic tribute to the legendary French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard, who passed away in September at 91. The film is based on an old man named Ananda, who happens to be a pornography addict.
He secretly watches pornography with some friends in a conservative Indian village. One day, they come across a Godard film, which they seem to have mistakenly rented. Though his friends were disgusted, Ananda gets attracted to Godard’s film and gradually develops an obsession. He initiates the idea of hosting a film festival in their village to showcase Godard's films, much to the surprise of his friends.
Adieu Godard won the Best Indian Film at the 27th Kolkata International Film Festival and has been travelling to several festivals across the world, since its world premiere at the 43rd Moscow International Film Festival last year. The film is also a part of the Official Panorama section at the 10th Asian Film festival of Barcelona where it will compete with several other Asian films.
“This is the seventh award for the film, and I'm so happy that it's getting so much love and attention. When a film as grounded as this competes with the best of the world and wins the Best Film at an international film festival like CIFF, it only boosts enthusiasm and reassures that cinema is not just glitter and gloss. Even after stripping cinema of its ornamental glamour, the language of cinema can still survive. In today's world, since there is a heavy imposition of technological grandeur, it is even more important that films like these get the due attention, and I'm extremely honoured by this win,” Bhattacharya shared.
Choudhury Bikash Das, who plays the lead protagonist Ananda, says "I'm so glad to be a part of this film. From the filmmaking style to the film itself, there is so much newness and uniqueness that you feel the joy of its success. I'm greatly honored at the love that film lovers have shown towards the film and towards my character. I hope the celebration continues."
