He had chronicled Indian middle-class emotions with simplicity and humour. His storytelling was unmistakable and one-of-a-kind. You watch a scene and you know it is a
Basu Chatterjee film. And while the film industry pays its tribute to the filmmaker-screenwriter who died this morning, senior actor
Arpita Chatterjee remembered how she grew up watching the films made by Basu Chatterjee.
“Basuda showed that simplicity is all that works. A friend of mine says, to be ordinary is extraordinary - Basu da was living example of this! I grew up watching his master pieces like Chhoti Si Baat, Rajnigandha, Baton Baton Mein, Khatta Meetha, Sara Akash, Ek Ruka Hua Faisla. His films reflect realism and naturalism with a keen eye on sociopolitical climate of the times, together with engaging drama, wit, humour and romanticism. May his soul rest in peace,” said Arpita while paying his tribute to the master filmmaker.
Meanwhile, noted director
Srijit Mukherji paid his tribute tweeting: “You walked on the middle of the road with
Hrishikesh Mukherjee. And my adolescence hopped along on the pavement. Rest in films, Basu Chatterjee.”
Basu Chatterjee's demise is yet another great loss to the film fraternity. His stellar story telling captured Indian minds and inspired a generation of young Indians.
