The release of
Arindam Sil directed ‘Mayakumari’ got postponed on multiple occasions due to the pandemic. Now, after much delay this period piece, also a tribute to Bengali cinema, is releasing in theatres on June 17.
The film marks
Rituparna Sengupta’s first collaboration with Arindam Sil. It also stars
Abir Chatterjee,
Rajatava Dutta, Arunima Ghosh,
Sourav Das, Anindita Bose, Indrasish Roy in pivotal roles.
Bankrolled by Camellia Productions, the plot of the film revolves around Mayakumari (Rituparna) and Kanan Kumar (Abir) who formed a hit pair of 1940’s Bengali cinema.
In the peak of her career, Mayakumari takes a sabbatical and her fans and followers start speculating about Maya Kumar’s sudden disappearance. Why did she leave films? The truth is she leaves films to live her life with her husband Sital Bhattacharya (Rajatava Dutta) far from media and the glamour world. But did she leave her film career because of her first onscreen kiss and the criticism she received from the society? To find these answers, the film’s plot shifts to current times as Soumitra Mallick (Indrasish) decides to make a film on Mayakumari and Kanan.
It’s also a musical film and the lyrics have been written by Suvendu Dasmunsi while the music is by
Bickram Ghosh.
