Moubani Sorcar is an artist too
She has magic in her genes. Little wonder then that Moubani Sorcar has woven magic on-screen as an actor and on the stage with her dancing prowess.
And now she is ready to unravel another side to her. Welcome Moubani Sorcar, the painter.
I have been painting for as long as I can remember, confides the actor-dancer, adding, I always scored the highest in art.
1x1 polls
In fact, my drawings in Life Science and Geography were appreciated all through my school years. Encouraged by my family, friends and teachers, I have now decided to make my artwork public. I feel the time is right.
Interestingly, Moubani is a self-taught artist. Baba is my biggest inspiration and he is responsible for my taking up the brush. Baba is an amazing artist and I remember him drawing a potrait of my Mum after their marriage. Portraits come naturally to me. In fact, I have also been inspired by Van Gogh, Salvadore Dali, Jyotirindranath Tagore and Nandalal Bose, elaborates the artist, who plans to come up with a series of 20 paintings and then have an exhibition of the same by the end of this year.
They are very Moubani Sorcar kind of paintings, she adds on a lighter note. While one canvas will be titled Possibility, there will be another by the name of Whisky Overdose. Possibility is about a girl with wings signifying how much she can fly. Whisky Overdose shows the adverse effect of bad music.
There will be another painting on the recent Stephen Court fire. My paintings intend to be a reflection of the times, Moubani stresses and adds that there is one very special painting in the series. Last year, I had been to Paris with my family. In between shoots, I managed to attend my familys shows. That was the first time I set sight on the Eiffel Tower. I was blown away by it because it has always been my dream to see this work of art. I started painting this artwork in Paris and that too under the Eiffel Tower. It will be my perception of the Eiffel Tower, adds the actor, who was named Moubani as her parents were inspired by Madhubani paintings.

Talking about her experiences with the brush, Moubani says, I had sent Bill Clinton a painting of him with Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He wrote me a letter saying that he loved the work. I also have a painting ready for MF Husain which I intend to gift him. That apart, I hope to paint Bumbada, my first hero and gift it to him. Interestingly, Moubani had painted Hrithik Roshan, which was mistaken for a photocopy by her friends mother!
Even as she laughs off that episode, on a more serious note, she signs off saying, A work or art should never be demoralising, but always inspirational. We like, we like!
