Basanta Bilap, the 1973 hit that tickled the funnybone of a generation of movie lovers, is the prime inspiration behind a comedy of today's time. Megaserial director Biswanath Chakraborty's big-screen debut, Abar Boshonto, not just deals with a similar storyline revolving around hostel occupants, it's also dubbed as a tribute to the Soumitra Chatterjee-Aparna Sen starrer.Abar Boshonto has an ensemble cast comprising
Saswata Chatterjee, Paran Bandopadhyay, Kharaj Mukherjee, Subhasish Mukherjee, Anjana Bose, Kanchan Mallick,
Sumit Samaddar and
Lama Halder.
The film revolves around Joy and Deepa, two teenagers who elope after their parents object to their match. Deepa takes shelter in Radhika Lodge, owned by Radhika. Joy, in order to accommodate himself with his lady love, checks into the same girls' hostel in the guise of a drag. But the threat to their happy union comes in the form of the boys' hostel owner Subhomoy. Said Biswanath, Subhomoy and Radhika, played by Saswata, and Anjana, have been in love since time immemorial. But after some bitter incidents leading to the two parting ways, the t lovebirds are now sworn enemies. As the owner of two rival hostels, these two are constantly crossing swords, though it is evident that the two are still very much in love." Saswata, who started shooting for the film last month, said, I share a love-hate relationship with Anjana's character. I play a happy-go-lucky person, whose motto in life is, 'prem chhara jibon andhokar', even though his own love story has not had a happy ending."
On the film's similarities with
Basanta Bilap, Saswata added, The basic storyline might give the same feel, but this film has many more twists and turns."
Newcomers Abhishek and Mayurakshi play Joy and Deepa, while Kharaj Mukherjee essays the role of a cop on the lookout for the young couple. The film is an out-and-out comedy and has many stock characters such as the hapless cop, the over-enthusiastic parar dada, the enraged parents, the feminist female hostelites, their lecherous male counterparts and the drag," added the director.
Music for the film is scored by
Raja Narayan Deb.
